HOLT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY (HLHS)
EXHIBITION AT KENYON HALL: Thursday 11th Jan 4:30 to 7:00pm
GEOPHYSICAL INVESTIGATIONS INTO HOLT’S ROMAN TILE WORKS
PROJECT TITLE
HLHS will soon start its Geophysical prospection of the scheduled Holt Roman tile works and surrounding land and are holding an exhibition at the Kenyon Hall this coming Thursday the 11th January between 4:30pm and 7:00pm. Please come and browse, watch, discuss and listen to the “What, Why, How, Where & When” of the project. This exhibition is designed for your convenience to pop in and out as you like.
PROJECT SUMMARY
The focus of this project is to investigate the landscape surrounding the village and update the chapter on its Roman history. Within the project area there is an important Military Pottery and Tile Works of the Roman XXth Legion plus some possible Bronze Age and Iron Age sites.
These extensive Holt Roman Tileworks are of national importance and were excavated between 1907 and 1915 by Mr T. Arthur Acton of Wrexham.
Ten years later, on his death, in 1925, his project still had no narrative. Subsequently, only artefacts, plans, maps and photographs were found, without any contextual or other written information.
Mr W Grimes, from the National Museum of Wales, took on the role of researcher, co-ordinator, interpreter and then author of the project, publishing his work in ‘Y Cymmrodor’, the journal of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion Vol XLI in 1930. The publication is entitled HOLT, DENBIGHSHIRE: The Works-Depot of the Twentieth Legion at Castle Lyons by W F GRIMES, M.A. (Department of Archaeology, National Museum of Wales).
Today, over one hundred years after these excavations finished, little has been added to the knowledge base.
This current project, funded by public subscription, enables HLHS to carry out a new, non invasive appraisal of this scheduled CADW site and its surrounding fields, using modern non-invasive scientific technologies. This will hopefully add significantly to the interpretation of this Roman site, its buildings, kilns, environs and operations during the first few centuries AD.
CADW have given written approved to both the projects and the local contractors that HLHS will use.
An important aspect of the project is to ensure local community awareness support and involvement happens before, during and after this geophysical survey. This will include training, workshops, exhibitions, lectures and practical instruction in geophysical surveys for HLHS volunteers.
Hope to see you there
